The Irish Cancer Society is advising people to protect their skin this week as the sunny weather continues.

Skin cancer is the most common type in Ireland with more than 11,000 cases last year.

The society says SPF cream should be worn in Ireland during the months of April to September, as the sun's rays will cause damage on 90% of days during that period.

Cancer Prevention Manager at the Irish Cancer Society, Kevin O'Hagan, explains what steps people can take to look after their skin:

"From April to September, often the UV level is high enough to damage the skin," he said.

"You should be taking proper safety precautions, including wearing sun cream."

Kevin O'Hagan continued, "but of course, it doesn't offer a 100% protection, so it's important to wear clothing that covers the skin."

"Long sleeves, collared t-shirts and of course wearing a wide brim hat to avoid the sun burning the ears, or back of the neck."

Parts of the west and southwest will see highest temperatures of up to 19 degrees today, with highs of 18 degrees in places yesterday.
