The Mayor of Limerick is looking at possibly scrapping one-way traffic from the city centre.
He's called the system outdated, as it was introduced when people passing had to go through the city as opposed to around it.
However, these days drivers heading towards parts of Cork, Clare, Kerry or South Limerick can use the M7 or N18 and avoid it altogether.
As part of the Transport Strategy, the Mayor will ask "can we re-visit those streets now and make them two way and running in either directions, or single lane one streets where we can widen the footpaths."
The Mayor also called wide one-way streets "intimidating."
"When a driver is driving on a one-way street with two or three lanes going in the same direction they seem to have in their brain that its all intended to get them through faster."
John Moran continued, "so when there's a blockage in front of themselves they shouldn't zip left or right like on the motorways."
But when traffic is running in the other direction on the other side of the road, he said "you go that bit slower because you're waiting as the traffic goes against you [on the other side.]"
Pedestrianisation
The Mayor was also asked about possibly pedestrianising a street in Limerick City.
He said all options are on the table, but "we made a mistake" with O'Connell Street some years ago.
However the Mayor said any radical changes need to be made carefully.
"We approached the main street, O'Connell Street, with a heavy engineering solution, it was a big change from what was there before."
The Mayor said the option is there to try out a couple of things "with a couple of cans of paint," and then adopt what works and make it more permanent after the tryouts.
