Leo Varadkar has stepped down as Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael.
He made the announcement at Government Buildings this afternoon.
His time as President and leader of Fine Gael ends with immediate effect, and his time as Taoiseach will end once his successor is prepared to take over.
A new Taoiseach will be elected when the Dáil resumes after the Easter break.
The public became aware of a pending announcement earlier today following reports of "frantic meetings" this morning.
The Cabinet met this morning for the first time since the defeat of the referendum and were alerted to expect the announcement following the Cabinet meeting.
Government won't be calling for a General Election following the news.
Mr Varadkar became Taoiseach in June 2017.
He will remain as Constituency TD for Dublin West, but says he has no definite personal or political plans.
