Anyone sitting their driving test from today is being warned of new changes

Until today, anyone sitting their driving test was asked to show six different hand signals when out on the road.

The question came up after the driver did their manoeuvres, usually the turnabout.

From today, that part of the test will now take part in the driving test office, after the questions about road signs, and before getting into the car.

More changes to come

It's also been announced some advanced technical checks will be introduced further down the line - those are the questions about what's under the bonnet of the car.

There are also plans to remove the grade one fault, which is the most minor fault, from the marking sheets.

The date those changes will be brought in is yet to be confirmed, but it's expected in the coming weeks.

While those changes are the only confirmed updates, there are rumours of some further changes coming.

There are reports parallel parking, commentary driving and a reverse around the corner on the driver's side could all be introduced next year, but the RSA hasn't announced this yet.

Robert McHugh, owner of Road Sense Driver Training in Kilkenny, says it's all part of efforts to modernise the test:

"The test hasn't been changed for years, I suppose, and they want to improve stuff. Myself, personally as a driving instructor, I can see the sense in bringing in the parallel parking, or maybe bay parking because that's something people are going to use after their test in everyday life. It's very practical."
