New changes have been announced that will make it easier for victims of domestic abuse to access rent supplement.

They will now be given the support immediately for three months based on referrals from Tusla services, Gardaí or the HSE.

A further three month extension may also be provided, subject to a means test.

After six months, victims can apply to their local authority for social housing supports such as HAP.

New Supports For Victims Of Domestic Abuse:

Minister Regina Doherty explains:

"Tusla, the HSE and An Garda Síochana can make direct referrals to our department.

"We will initially provide a deposit and three month's rent for victims of violence."

"That can be extended by a further to give us the space to find a long-term, sustainable home for these victims."

Minister Doherty said the restrictions on movement during the coronavirus outbreak had brought the issue of domestic violence into "stark relief."

Also, she says she is determined that "no one should suffer additional trauma during the current health emergency".

Garda statistics have shown that has been a 25% in calls related to domestic violence this year.
