Children under 18 could be banned from getting intimate piercings and tattoos.
Fianna Fáil wants the ban to regulate the body art sector in Ireland.
It’s estimated around one-third of people under 40 have tattoos.
Under the proposed legislation, body artists would not be allowed to carry out tattoos or intimate piercings, including to the tongue and breasts, on anyone under 18.
Fianna Fáil TD Mary Butler, who is proposing the ban, says she's not about creating a nanny state:
"I'm not trying to come across as someone who is in a nanny state but what we're talking about is if you get a tattoo the tattoo is there for life. There are some rogue operators here in Ireland."
