Figures on STI cases by the HSE show there have been 241 cases of chlamydia and 93 cases of gonorrhoea recorded in the past week.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre says the number of people contracting an STI in Ireland continues to rise.

In its weekly report, it shows what types of infections and how many cases have been reported.

This year alone over 1,600 cases of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections have been reported.

Chlamydia is the most common condition of all the infections.

The report presents the number of weekly HIV and STI events notified in Ireland.

Data for the report are extracted from the Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR) system.

Figures in the weekly HIV&STI report should be regarded as provisional until a process of validation has been completed at the end of the notification year.
