The Higher Education Minister, Simon Harris, is warning that needle spiking is beginning to "take hold" in Ireland.
There have been dozens of reports of women being spiked by injection in bars and nightclubs in the UK recently.
The Government is planning to launch an awareness campaign with the Union of Students in Ireland in the coming weeks.
Students at University College Cork staged a protest last night to raise awareness about needle spiking.
This student says she has been spiked a number of times while working at late night venues:
"It was a very scary experience to know that I was working and I was enjoying myself because I thought I was safe at a sound desk. And now the fact there's new ways of it happening has me absolutely Terrified."
Garda Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Region, Anne Marie Cagney, says they're taking the matter very seriously.
