It followed similar moves in other countries such as Latvia, Lithuania and Norway.
A proposal to rename the street that houses the Russian embassy in Dublin is not expected to go ahead.
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council had passed a motion to rename Orwell Road.
The proposed new name was 'Independent Ukraine Road' in support of Ukraine amid the crisis.
But it's now believed that the move could be stopped by residents on Orwell Road itself.

While Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council backed the move, residents have the deciding vote.
It's not expected local residents would back the motion for the 'Independent Ukraine Road' name change.
Dermot Lacey. former Lord Mayor, says he's decided not to go ahead with a similar move.
He currently sits on Dublin City Council and a similar motion has now been shelved.
"There was a difference of opinion on what the road should be called, in terms of the new road," he said.
"Ukraine Road, Independent Ukraine Road, Zelensky road, there were different views of that."
"Some people believed that they hoped the process of the plebiscite would be long over."
