A new report estimates there are 12,000 problem gamblers in Ireland.
The survey from the Health Research Board found young men who experience substance abuse are at highest risk.
It has also revealed men are five times more likely to become a problem gambler.
Medical director of the Priority Medical Clinic in Dundrum, Garrett McGovern, says the 12,000 figure is probably an under-estimate.
McGovern said that these statistics do not surprise him and in reality they are probably much higher.
It hasn't gained the same treatment as alcohol or drug treatment have in this country according to the medical director.
