People who aren't registered to vote are being urged to get the process over and done with today if they can.

The final deadline to get on the supplementary register of electors is close of business on Wednesday 22nd.

People need to bring photo ID to have their application form signed by a garda.

USI president Lorna Fitzpatrick says it's good to have the form ready before going down to your local station.

"The forms can be downloaded, some Garda stations may have them but to be safe you'd be better to download them and print them off," she said.

"I know all the local students' unions have them printed and have them ready there, so if you wanted to call into your local students' union tomorrow you'd be able to pick one up."

"All you need is any form of photographic ID so that they can verify your name and so on when the Gardaí are signing that off and stamping [it]."

She says some student unions are arranging voter registration sessions in the days ahead, with Gardaí available on campus to witness the forms.

People are being encouraged to check if they're registered to see whether they're on the register of electors in their area.

The supplementary register of electors drawn up for the local elections last year won't be merged with the official register until after the general election on February 8th.

Lorna Fitzpatrick says councils are responsible for the registers, and they're taking differing approaches in some areas.

"There's been quite a lot of confusion. Different councils are reacting slightly differently, so our advice would be to visit checktheregister.ie or call the local county council just to double-check -- it'll only take a couple of seconds," she said.

You can download the RFA2 form you need to get on the supplementary register here.
