Protection money
Dublin City Council is facing mounting pressure to explain reports criminals were paid 'protection money' to allow council houses to be built.
The High Court was told the money was handed over to stop anti-social behaviour on three sites in the west of the city.
Yesterday during a case, the High Court heard 'security' or 'protection money' was being paid to gangland figures.
It was to allow social housing be built in Cherry Orchard.
Three firms, who were delivering the homes for Dublin city council, were handing over between €1,200 and €1,500 a week to stop attacks on workers, the court was told.
It also heard officials from the council were aware and recommended the money was paid.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy says DCC is investigating the matter and will report back to him;
