The news was confirmed in a release from Áras an Uactarain.
President Michael D Higgins and his wife, Sabina, have contracted Covid-19.
The two displayed mild symptoms and tested themselves this morning.
A positive result appeared on their antigen tests so they are now self-isolating.
They have confirmed that President Higgins will continue to carry out duties from home.

The Áras an Uactarain release reads:
President and Sabina Higgins, Having displayed mild Covid-19 symptoms this morning and having taken antigen tests that have tested positive, will be isolating for the next 7 days.
The president while isolating is continuing to work from home.
President Michael D Higgins was supposed to launch 'Better Ballymun Day' today.
It's an event set up to celebrate one of Dublin's pillar communities in the north of the city.
