Sex education is in line for a major overhaul.
A new draft curriculum for SPHE in secondary schools will see topics such as pornography, consent, sexuality and identity being taught.
Dr Siobhan O'Higgins, member of the Active consent programme, was involved in developing the draft scheme.
She says in recent years, children have become more and more exposed to sexual content.
"I'd say that most children have seen sexual media which is not just pornography.
"There's sexual images throughout the internet and social media, all of those things that they are engaging with.
"These images can be confusing and upsetting for them and they don't know who to talk to about it.
"It's about building critical thinking and critical media literacy skills for our children."
