University students hope a new video campaign aimed at tackling sexual assault opens crucial conversations across Ireland.

The bystander Intervention programme aims to highlight how students can intervene in unsafe situations and stop incidents of assault before they happen.

It explains how students can intervene in unsafe situations and make campuses safer.

University College Cork is behind the programme, which is being made available to Higher Education Institutes nationwide.

Asha Woodhouse, President of UCC Students’ Union, hopes those who see the videos pass on what they have learned to others:

"It really starts the conversation externally with those around you, your family, friends and peers challenging their misconceptions."

Asha stressed the importance of starting the conversation not only with others but with yourself:

"It also will play a critical role in starting a conversation, both externally and internally. Internally with yourself, how you view the issue of sexual abuse, what you have experienced or know others have experienced, how that makes you feel and what you can do about it."

With students returning to campuses shortly after a long hiatus, there has never been a more important time to bring up the conversation around sexual assault.
