A new obesity drug approved for use in Ireland is not for everyone.

That's according to the HSE clinical lead on obesity who says Wegovy is exciting and will help many people.

The weekly injection has been used to treat type 2 diabetes for over a decade.

But Dr. Donal O'Shea says despite its positive benefits, it needs to be targeted at those who really need it.

O'Shea says there are people with a BMI of 30 who have health complications such as type 2 diabetes and there are people with a BMI of 40 to 45 that will not require this treatment.

A person's weight status is assessed using Body Mass Index in Ireland. A BMI of over 30 falls within the obesity range.
