The Higher Education Minister says the current rent rules for student accommodation are 'ridiculous.'
Simon Harris says he's working to change the rule where students have to pay up front.
Some students also have to pay many months of their rents in advance.
The Rule Is "Utterly Unacceptable"
Minister Harris says he's working alongside his cabinet colleagues to change that.
"I find it utterly unacceptable that students are being asked to pay many months in advance."
"Myself and the Minister for Housing will be bringing proposals to cabinet this month, to make sure students only have to pay one month at a time."
"Not this ridiculous scenario, where for purpose built accommodation they could have to fork out for three or four or five, or even the whole year."
"Which can be a huge up front cost."
"So I want to change that."
