The Rise Of Domestic Violence For Men

The recent heatwave may have lifted the general mood of the nation but the national Male Advice Line for victims of domestic abuse and violence (MAL) is reporting increased feelings of isolation among men whose lives can be an emotional pressure cooker.

Even though Ireland is opening up Derek Smith, MAL Supervisor with Men’s Development Network said:

“One of the emerging trends we have detected over the past few months is how men can feel overwhelmed by feelings of being alone, isolated, dismissed and devalued.

This can prevent men from calling the service  in the first place."

It can’t be underestimated how abusive relationships, in which men are on the receiving end, can make them feel incredibly fragile and helpless.

"Domestic abuse and violence are not gender-specific.

The situations we deal with are becoming more prevalent.

It might be high summer, but the lows many men are experiencing due to different kinds of abuse within their relationships are clear to us working on the Male Advice Line.

As well as the perceived stigma and embarrassment, the fact that other people seem to be enjoying their lives at this time of year often amplifies victims’ sense of alienation and inadequacy.

Our core objective is to ensure you are safe and that you can talk through what is happening to you without fear, shame or blame and provide practical advice and emotional support."

Derek Smith said.

The confidential phoneline service is also available to family and friends who may have concerns for a loved one and are seeking some guidance on how to help them.
