All third year students are to be awarded a certificate for the completion of the Junior Cycle.
Schools will be given autonomy to assess students.
They'll receive a written school report on their achievements in each subject.
Plans for class-based tests to replace the Junior Cert in the autumn have been scrapped.

Education Minister Joe Mc Hugh says the decision gives students and their families more clarity and certainty.
Minister Mc Hugh says it also gives schools freedom to decide how best to assess the progress of students following three years of hard work and learning.
Earlier this month, the Department of Education planned for a school-based assessment for Junior Cycle students to take place in September.
However, it was met with widespread opposition from schools, with some saying they were not going to comply with it.
Speaking this afternoon, TUI President Seamus Lahart also said:
‘We welcome the certainty that these revised arrangements provide at a time of worry, stress and uncertainty for students, parents and teachers.
