While television programmes like Father Ted brought it to international ears.

Susie Dent is a lexicographer and longtime Dictionary Corner resident on Channel 4's Countdown.
She outlines the history of 'Gobsh**e'
"The first example is in the Navy, the US Navy for an enlisted sailor."
"That's 1910."
"So then 30 years later it appears in Irish-English."
"To mean A foolish or incompetent person who talks nonsense and speaks incessantly."
"So you (Irish people) definitely made it popular, but I'm afraid it was in the US Navy first."
