The Government is expected to announce soon who can be exempt from mandatory hotel quarantine.

It comes as 16 further countries have been added to the quarantine list.

Passengers from countries like France and Italy are among those that now have to quarantine in a hotel when they arrive here.

Flights have already come in from Philadelphia and New York.

However Dublin Airport says it’s incredibly quiet, as it has been all year.

Additionally, the issue of mandatory hotel quarantine has resulted in big discussions within the Government.

So some feel it’s too rigid and there should be exemptions.

For example  the Foreign Affairs Minister says they hope to reveal soon if vaccinated people can be exempt.

Simon Coveney says "hopefully we'll be able to make a decision on that soon."

"Tremendous Numbers" From Vaccines

Meanwhile Immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill says the evidence is growing stronger that people are unlikely to transmit the virus, if they have received a vaccine.

"I mean Astra Zeneca gives at least a 60% to 70% decrease in transmission."

He says "Pfizer has a 90% decreased transmission if you're vaccinated."

Adding to that, "These are tremendous numbers for any vaccine."

People arriving into Ireland today should have pre-booked their mandatory hotel quarantine.

But the booking system is now suspended due to overcapacity.

However there is a buffer of a few rooms available for unexpected arrivals.
