German officials believe Madeleine McCann is dead and police are treating her disappearance as a murder investigation.
They've identified a 43-year-old suspect - who is in jail in the country for other offences.
Public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters says the man lived in the same area where the little girl disappeared in 2007.
"The accused has multiple previous convictions of sexual crimes. He had already been sentenced for sexual abuse of children, and is already serving a longer prison sentence for other offences."
Her family's spokesperson - Clarence Mitchell - says Kate and Gerry McCann need closure:
"They are realistic. They simply want to know what happened to their daughter. That's always been the cases. They want whoever is responsible for her disappearance to be brought to justice," he said.
"They do remain hopeful that she could still be found alive. They've never given up that hope, nor will they."
The suspect is alleged to have transferred one of his vehicles to someone else's name the day after Madeline disappeared.
