Change has come to the 53 parishes of Kerry over the weekend. The announcement was made by Bishop Ray Browne, last may but has now been put into practice.

There are no funerals, this includes mass, liturgy and burials, allowed to take place on a Sunday in Kerry.

The main reason behind this is the fact that there is a limited availability of priests. According to the Irish Examiner there are six parishes in Kerry's diocese that currently have no resident priest and there is only one priest under the age of 40.

There is only one other county in Ireland that has this ban, that is the archdiocese of Dublin.

The ban also applies to Christmas Day and St. Patrick's Day. Other Holy Days of Obligation are left to the decision of the parish priest.
