Free Now is a popular ride-hailing app nationwide.
The head of Free Now has spoken out about a shortage of taxis.
Many have found themselves unable to order a taxi on their app late at night.
It's led to plenty of people walking home dangerously at night or staying in temporary shelters.
Free Now General Manager, Niall Carson, explains why there have been so many issues.
Interview on the radio just now about the lack of taxis in Dublin.
One guy...... we HAVE to go to Coppers cause we can't get a taxi 🤣🤣— Jennifer O'Brien (@TheDublinJenn) April 30, 2022
One of those is a depleted fleet, according to Carson, with 30 per cent fewer taxi drivers operating since the pandemic.
Another is the increase in demand. We've seen a return as of late to nightlife and venues reopening.
Free Now says late licencing laws are forcing many to order late at night, at the same time.
Despite the problems, Carson admits there are issues that need to be addressed.
"Last weekend when the Ed Sheeran concert finished, within one hour, had 30,000 requests for a taxi."
