Researchers say an "enormous number" of people are listening to the radio digitally every day.

While, traditional FM is still the most popular way to consume radio in Ireland, there's a "slow and steady' growth in digital listening.

New research from Ipsos MRBI found over three quarters of the Irish population are still listening to the radio in the car or at home.

3.2 million people in total continue to listen to the radio daily.

Managing Director Damien Loscher says how people are listening is changing, but that radio listenership hasn't been lost.

"330,000 people is not a small number... is an enormous number of people listening to radio every day via a digital device."

Trust In Radio News Remains High

Mr Loscher says people have confidence in radio: "In terms of news they trust in radio."

Chair of the Joint National Listenership management committee, Scott Williams, says digital listenership is growing.

"It's people spreading their listening across the FM channels and on digital devices."

Mr Williams expects a growing usage of smart speakers in the future "largely out of convenience".

Digital listening is most prominent in 15 to 24 year olds at 16 percent.

While 1 in 5 adults have downloaded a radio station app on their smartphone.
