Defence Forces member accidentally fires weapon at a petrol station.
Gardaí and the Defence Forces Military Police are investigating after a weapon was shot accidentally.
It happened on Wednesday on Abbeyleix Road in Porlaoise.
Members of the Defence Forces were on their way to start a prisoner escort.
They stopped off en-route at a petrol station where the incident happened.
No one was injured in the incident.
In a statement, the Defence Forces said:
“All members of Óglaigh na hÉireann are subject to the highest standards of weapons handling."
“Prior to commencing a prisoner escort, there was a weapon discharged by one of the personnel on duty.
“Breaches of procedure and safety in relation to firearms are investigated as a matter of course, with disciplinary action being taken where warranted.”
