518 people have tested positive for Covid 19 in the last 24 hours.

There has been no additional deaths.

68% of the new cases are in people under 45 years of age.

134 of the cases are in Dublin, 53 are in Cork, 49 are in Limerick.

While there are 34 in are Donegal and 32 in Meath.

Finally the remaining 216 cases are spread across 20 counties.

There has been a total of 1,810 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland.

Cabinet Announcement On Restrictions Expected

Earlier Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan failed to convince a team of ministers that moving to level five restrictions was the right decision.

Instead the entire country will be placed on level three.

So that's where Dublin and Donegal have been.

Government sources said they will be upping the monitoring and enforcement of those restrictions

That is instead of moving to a full lockdown.

It's a serious division point between politicians and public health officials.

The government has never so roundly rejected NPHET's advice.

Ministers will now have to outline how the rising number of cases, hospitalisations and ICU admissions will be dealt with sufficiently.

So the health service isn't overwhelmed this winter.

Some of the Ministers who were not in this afternoon's meeting with Dr. Holohan are annoyed the decision appears to have been made without them.

But they also had concerns about shooting up to level five and the impact that would have.

A formal announcement will come later this evening.

However the relationship between NPHET and the government has undoubtedly taken a blow.

That will be put under the microscope in days to come.
