Dog poo patrols are being set up in Cork city, with litter wardens going undercover.

So that's to conduct checks in known blackspots.

They will wear civilian clothes, and carry out "out-of-hours" enforcement.

The council says the checks will be a mix of education and fines.

It hasn't handed a single fine out for dog fouling in the City since 2017.

Cork city council’s director of operations David Joyce says the checks will begin with a pilot programme:

"Particularly at recreational facilities, but in other areas across the city."

"It's going to be, the litter wardens are going to go out and undertake these patrols."

"So we're going to try this as a pilot for a number of weeks to see if it has any impact when they go out."

"They'll be outside uniform and outside normal working hours."

The Area "Is Being Destroyed"

Labour councillor John Maher there are a number of blackspots in the city.

He says Covid gets the blame sometimes, but mentions it was an issue before the pandemic too.

"Many of our walkways, parks and even the streets are being destroyed."

John says it's a minority, but that the minority can sometimes cause the most damage.
