Computer Science will become an exam subject in the Leaving Cert from September.
Around 40 schools will offer the subject when it comes in.
The announcement by the Education Minister follows coding being introduced as part of the primary school maths curriculum.
Richard Bruton says the initiative is to prepare children for a society "fundamentally transformed" by new technology.
