Chinese looks set to be introduced as a Leaving Cert subject in the near future.
It's part of new plans to be announced by the Education Minister surrounding the learning of foreign languages.
The strategy aims that all students will study a foreign language for the Junior Cert in the next 5 years, while at Leaving Cert level it's hoped a 10 percent increase in students studying a new language will be achieved.
As well as the introduction of Chinese, the likes of so-called heritage languages including Polish and Portuguese look set to get their own proper curriculum.
