Charlie Bird says he will always remember April 2nd as a “Day of Kindness”, as thousands took part in his Climb with Charlie fundraiser.
Today, the former broadcaster presented a 3.3million euro cheque to Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, in a special ceremony in Dublin’s Merrion Square.
Thousands of hikers took to the mountains of Ireland, the US, Australia, South Africa and Europe to raise money for the charities - with Charlie completing the challenge on Croagh Patrick.
Speaking through a speech aid device, Charlie paid tribute to the community in Westport for backing his fundraiser:
" I want to give a special word of thanks to all the people of Westport for the incredible way they came on board to me our climb of Croagh Patrick such a memorable event. And one that will go down in the history of Ireland's holy mountain. All of you down in the West made this happen".
Thanks to everyone who supported climbwithcharlie you made this day possible. Just see that amount of money you all did it. I love everyone of you. To be honest I was scared of dying but after all the love and kindness you have shown me. I am now in a much happier place. Thanks pic.twitter.com/ryTQyNzsRY
