Bewley's to shut permanently
The closure of Bewley's on Grafton Street has been described as the loss of part of Dublin and also part of our heritage.
Management have informed staff that the café will close in the coming weeks with the loss of 110 jobs.
Christmas catch ups and scones on a Saturday sum up Bewleys for many.
The iconic café opened in 1927.
The financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis and also rents of €1.5 million per year are believed to have been factors in the owners' decision to close the café.
The Restaurants Association of Ireland also says a specific plan for hospitality is needed with targeted supports.
It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the proposed closure of the Bewley’s Café, Grafton St. We would like to sincerely thank all our café staff for their loyalty and dedication and of course our customers, who have shared many memories with us over the decades. pic.twitter.com/9RiZfA2QTE
