Alfie Evans' parents say that they are 'heartbroken' after their son passed away at 2.30 this morning.
The 23 month old was taken off life support at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool on Monday.
In the last week Alfie's parents have had a series of bids to take him to Italy for treatment rejected by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
A campaign, launched by his parents attracted widespread media attention and saw them clash with doctors over the child's treatment.
A statement from hospital said staff expressed their "heartfelt sympathy".
