6 out of 10 women and girls under 20 say they have been cat called in the previous week.

Catcalling came in the form of whistling, jeering or sexual comments.

The survey was carried out by Amarach research for transition year students in a north Dublin school.

The girls in transition year at Maryfield College in Drumcondra wanted to see if their experiences during lockdown were reflected more generally.

Half of those who experienced catcalling said it happened a number of times in the previous week.

Teacher Margaret McLoughlin says the students want to see the issue addressed by the government.

"A man can say anything to a girl walking in the park, on the street, in a bus and there's nothing that can be done about it."

She says her students want to see catcalling legislated against.
