Zombies in Riverdale
It turns out Riverdale was originally supposed to follow Archie and the gang as they survive a zombie apocalypse.
The series was based on Afterlife with Archie which is a comic about the undead living in the mystical town.
Show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa opens up about their initial plans for the series.
He tells EW, 'When we were originally talking about doing a show about the Archie comic characters...'
'One of the takes we debated pitching was Afterlife with Archie and it being not a descendant of Dawson’s Creek as Riverdale is, but a descendant of Buffy.'
'That was an idea that everyone was passionate about.'

The apocalypse plot
The plot for the zombie version of Riverdale is actually quite interesting.
Jughead asks teen witch Sabrina Spellman (Chilling Adventures) to bring his pet dog back to life.
It all goes terribly wrong when the dog comes back as a zombie.
Jughead becomes infected after the dog bites him.
The teen ends up spreading the disease throughout the town of Riverdale.

When the whole town becomes infected, Archie and his mates have no choice but to run.
When Archie becomes the leader of the gang, he gets into difficulty with Veronica's father Hiram who has other ideas.
The current plot
The plot they eventually settled on however, follows Archie and the gang solving murders in the town of Riverdale.
It touches on the struggles of teen life from confusing relationships to social cliques.
