Paul Mescal & Saoirse Ronan
Normal People's Paul Mescal and Lady Bird's Saoirse Ronan will play a young married couple in the new movie Foe.
It's a film adaptation of Iain Reid's bestselling science fiction novel of the same name.
According to Deadline, the movie is set in the near future.
In a time, 'where corporate power and environmental decay are ravaging the planet.'
The Irish actors will play Junior and Hen; a young married couple of seven years living their lives together on an isolated farm.
One night, a stranger (LaKeith Stanfield) shows up at their door with news that will turn their world upside down.
He announces that Junior has been chosen to travel to a large, experimental space station orbiting Earth.
And Hen doesn't have to worry about missing him when he's gone, because arrangements have already been made.
'Hen will have familiar company that pushes her to make a life-changing decision.'
The film's director
Director Garth Davis and the book's author worked together on the film script.
Speaking to Deadline, Davis said directing a science fiction movie is something he's had on his, 'bucket list,' for a while now.
So when he read Foe, he knew he had to do something with it.
He explained the movie's premise, 'The point of the movie is that corporate power and environmental decay is literally eating away at the natural world, not just the environment but from a human point of view, it’s eating away at society and taking away why we’re meant to be here and what connects us.'
'We’re losing our self-determination and vibrancy.'
On the casting, he said, 'What I love about Saoirse is, you see her on screen and she is just so unfiltered and alive.'
'She represents to me all the things we need to protect in the world.'
'Putting her in the belly of this suspenseful and uneasy story is the whole point.'
'What she represents is precious, she’s an empath. She fights for the things we all should be fighting for.'
'I was looking for an actress who just had those qualities, and that beauty.'
Davis shared his belief that Paul and Saoirse will make the perfect, 'rural couple.'
'Paul Mescal, he is just a normal guy and you believe he’s married to her and that they come from the same part of the world, which they do in reality. I buy them as a rural couple.'
Filming will get underway in Australia, January 2022.
