Over 6,000 second-level students and teachers are to attend  Student Leaders’ Congress sponsored by the University of Limerick with speakers including Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Helen McEntee TD, and Connacht Rugby Head Coach, Pat Lam.

A corner of the University of Limerick campus will turn orange as Cycle Against Suicide holds its Student Leaders’ Congress in the UL Sport Arena.

The event will attract over 6,000 second level students and teachers to the University of Limerick Arena this Wednesday and Thursday, the 18th and â€ª19th of January, with over 3,000 students attending each day. UL is the event’s primary sponsor.

The 2017 Congress is booked out since last September. This will be the fifth annual Student Leaders’ Congress and the first to be held outside Dublin. The aim of the event is to promote positive mental health and help-seeking behaviour in young people.

The Congress brings together young adults and teachers from all over the island of Ireland, including a high concentration of schools attending from Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Kerry and Laois.

Students will experience an inspiring and energetic forum comprising celebrity speakers, live entertainment, discussion and much more to promote Cycle Against Suicide’s message that “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help.”

Speakers at this year’s event include Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Helen McEntee TD, Connacht Rugby Head Coach, Pat Lam, The Ombudsman for Children, Dr. Niall Muldoon, Sociologist and Irish Travellers' rights activist, Sindy Joyce and even a special appearance from Dustin The Turkey!

There will be music from The Strypes, Orla Gartland and The High Hopes Choir plus many more.

The theme of this year’s Congress is “Share The Journey”, with students presenting projects based around this.
