How Do You Sleep singer Sam Smith has thanked a UK presenter for referring to them with a non-binary pronoun on Twitter.

The artist came out as non-binary earlier this year in an interview with Jameela Jamil.

"I am not male or female."

Radio host James Barr took to Twitter following an interview with Sam Smith.

'just interviewed @samsmith and they sounded so happy and free and more themselves than ever.'

Sam responded to the tweet:

Non-binary

The hit-maker bravely came out as non-binary in March this year.

They open up in an interview with Jameela Jamil during an episode of I Weigh Interviews.

"I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between."

The singer explains, "Non-binary/genderqueer is that you do not identify in a gender."

"You are a mixture of all different things. You are your own special creation."

"I've always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality..."

"So I’ve just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well."

In the interview, they admit they often questioned whether they would even like a sex change.

"When I saw the word non-binary, genderqueer, and I read into it, and I heard these people speaking..."

"I was like, ‘F**k, that is me.'"

In an interview with GQ Heroes issue, they admit, 'Some days I've got my manly side and some days I've got my womanly side.'
