The group are alleged to have not made it clear that they were receiving compensation for the promotion.
The eight charged are actress Lindsay Lohan, influencer Jake Paul, rappers and singers Soulja Boy, Ne-Yo, Lil Yachty, Akon, Austin Mahone and adult film star Kendra Lust (real name Michele Mason).

It's alleged that all eight were told to make it appear as if they personally wanted to recommend the crypto tokens, rather than letting their audience know it was an ad.
By not being transparent, each of the celebs broke disclosure requirements.
The complaint alleges that this move aimed to harm crypto investors.

Six of the eight celebs have agreed to pay more than $400,000 in penalties. Soulja Boy and Austin Mahone have not yet reached a settlement.
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are responsible for pressing charges. They can issue civil penalties like fines and don't press criminal charges.
